As Fall/Winter 2016’s New York Fashion Week commences, this year’s Winter draws to a close. It is bittersweet, bidding goodbye to the season of chilly weather and comfy turtleneck sweaters. However, the time of sunshine and romance is soon to be upon us, and we ought to be dressed for the occasion (season). Left with merely ONE more month to shop for Spring 2016 clothing, this guide will help you save hours of googling “spring summer 2016 what to wear”. For those looking for a simple Spring 2016 guide, I have curated and compiled a list of pieces to stock up on before Spring arrives. Enjoy!
1. Slip Dresses
Having made a name in the lingerie department, the slip dress is best known for its sexy silhouette. Tired of being confined to the walls of a bedroom, the slip dress, very much like last year, made multiple appearances down the runway. Its loose and comfortable design makes it perfect for hot summers. They are versatile pieces that are excellent for day-to-night looks.
2. Cold Shoulder Tops
The cold shoulder top is one of the most prominent (and fun) trends of Spring 2016. Both shoulder cut-outs and off-the-shoulder pieces were enormously popular on the runway this year, and for good reason; they are a subtle, yet sexy, way to show off some skin. This is yet another trend that has crept back from previous years, but with a twist. The latest cold shoulder tops feature an “X” neckline, as shown below. Keep on a lookout for them in shops, they’re an item that will probably quickly disappear from shelves.
Also, if you want the full cold shoulder experience, go for off-the-shoulder pieces. They are cute and easy to style. However, if you are uncomfortable with baring too much of your shoulders, stick to tops or dresses with shoulder cut-outs. They are easier to wear, as they do not require constant tugging of sleeves, while displaying less skin.
It is time to say goodbye to the car wash pleats we loved the whole of Fall 2015, as designers opted for a change this season. With its easy, breezy, flowy silhouette, it is no wonder micropleats was their choice for Spring and Summer. Chances are you already have a micropleated skirt in your closet. If not, don’t fret, they can be found just about everywhere right now. Loving the trend? Get them in three different lengths: mini, midi, and maxi!
Bold stripes is one of the major prints of the season. Being featured on garments from structured evening dresses to casual t-shirts, these stripes are nothing but versatile. Go all out with colourful stripes, and heads will definitely turn.
5. Shiny Fabrics
Silver definitely outshone gold on the runway this season. If you’re looking to style an attention grabbing outfit, metallic fabric is the way to go. Featured in all sorts of silhouettes, from sequinned cocktail dresses to reflective leather jackets, you are bound to be able to find something suited for you. If you prefer something not too out there, go for silver accessories instead.
6. Blue Denim
It should come as no surprise that blue denim was featured all over the runway. Luckily for us, besides being a Spring and Summer staple, blue denim, in one form or another, is something we should already have in our closets. This season, be adventurous and pick out a piece that you don’t already own. Overalls, maybe? Also, don’t be afraid to try denim on denim. 🙂
7. Silk PJs
Bedroom inspired pieces were favoured by many this season. From floral PJ pants, to sparrow printed silk button-downs, these are what everyone will be rocking in Spring 2016. Their loose and flowy silhouette is perfect for the warmer weather, giving your skin room to breathe. For dressier or work-related occasions, opt for silk. If you’re looking to keep it casual, stiffer fabrics – such as cotton – would work better.
8. Bright Colours
Spring is when bright colours start to make an appearance after months of monochromatic winter attire. Feeling rather fiery, designers elected red and orange as their favourite colours this season. This Spring, rock these bold colours with pride.
That concludes the list of 2016 spring clothing essentials. Happy shopping!
